Toastmasters International is a nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California, by Ralph C. Smedley, who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to speak more effectively. More clubs were formed, and Toastmasters International was incorporated under California law on December 19, 1932. The organization now has 211,000 members in 10,500 clubs in 90 countries.
Toastmasters International's World Headquarters is located in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Its 70-member staff provides support services, educational materials, a monthly magazine, and an interactive Web site.
At ATC Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical meeting is made up of 10 to 20 people who meet once a week (Monday or Thursday at noon) for an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice:
Upon joining a Toastmasters club, each new member receives a variety of manuals and resources on how to become a better speaker and a more confident leader. Members also have access to other books and educational resources. Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. In Toastmasters, members learn leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and by completing projects in the leadership manuals. A Toastmasters meeting excites your brain. Participants at meetings who are not giving a formal prepared speech are usually asked to participate in "Table Topics." This is a 2 minute impromptu speech on a topic selected by the Table Topics Master with the speaker having no time for preparation.

Everyone who speaks at a Toastmasters meeting has their speech evaluated by another Toastmaster. Evaluating challenges you because you must always remain encouraging, constructive and positive. As an evaluator, you need to be very alert. You have to think on your feet in order to mention all the good points of a person's speech and mention some aspects that may need improvement.
